Our History

Historical Snapshot

Our chorus was formed and chartered fifty-seven years ago in Toms River, New Jersey and we are honored today to be the only Ocean County Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. With its headquarters in Nashville, TN, the Society today is composed of just under 23,000 singers throughout the United States and Canada who are members of one (or more) of the nearly 800 member choruses at this time.

Our Purpose

The Oceanaires Chorus has a dual purpose. First of all, we offer a quality recreational singing opportunity and the experience of camaraderie with men of good character who enjoy singing. Second, our purpose is to blend the current listener popularity of acappella singing groups with our historical intent to help preserve the musical art form and style of traditional American barbershop harmony singing. The result is the presence of a great group of local men whose hobby is acappella singing of familiar Broadway, Americana, spiritual and contemporary songs to a variety of audiences in northern Ocean County, NJ.

Recent Noteworthy Achievements

As an indication of the quality of performances by our current forty members, over the last five years our chorus has been appraised very positively by certified judging panels of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Most recently, in October of 2013, we were again scored by Society judges at the Mid-Atlantic States District convention in Ocean City, MD. At that event we proudly finished 14th among the District's nearly 100 member choruses that had earned the right during the year to compete at the annual convention.

In each of the past five years, our congenial chorus has been pleased to be invited to perform at over a dozen events at various Ocean County civic events, local organization group functions, and worthwhile fund raising endeavors. In addition, the chorus is always exhilarated to annually produce its public performance to typically near sell out audiences. After hearing a performance, the men of The Oceanaires Chorus hope you will agree that their volunteer chorus continues to be a positive valued contributor to the musical arts in Ocean County.

Come Sing With Us or Have Us Sing for You!

We have the ongoing ambition to continue to grow our chorus with new members of all ages. Men who like to sing and would like to visit one of our rehearsals and visit with some of our members can stop by any Tuesday night in the downstairs general purpose room of the Toms River First Baptist Church at 700 Main Street in Toms River, NJ. To sing with our chorus you don’t need to have prior chorus experience, and reading sheet music is not required. Also, although our annual performance schedule is thankfully busy, we try to accommodate any group who wants us to perform for them. Our performance fee is reasonable and always negotiable.
